In September 2019, our director, Stella Ioannou, was appointed as ‘Curator for the Public Realm’ for Culture Mile. We are working closely with the Culture Mile team to continue creating a diverse programme of dynamic public realm events and interventions for all to experience.
Culture Mile is the City of London’s cultural initiative that will inject art and culture into various public spaces in the Square Mile, activating the public realm from Farringdon to Moorgate. The Culture Mile team comprises five core project partners: the City of London Corporation, the Barbican Centre, the Museum of London, the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and the London Symphony Orchestra. We will be working with these innovative institutions to help deliver a programme that is experimental and joined-up and that takes advantage of the rich 2,000-year history of the area. The Culture Mile programme will further establish the City as a cultural destination accessible to all, rather than simply a destination for commerce.
We look forward to building on the success of the fantastic Culture Mile events and interventions that have taken place since its inception in 2017, including:
‘Oi Barman! In the City’, a spoken word performance written and performed by Joshua Idehen about bar life, part of Culture Mile Nights, 21st -23rd November 2019
‘House of Wayward Plants: Smithfield Greenhouse’, a pavilion commissioned by Culture Mile and created by Wayward that was installed in the Smithfield Rotunda Gardens and acted as a hub for events and workshops open to the public, part of Culture Mile’s summer programme Play the Mile, June to August 2019
‘Sound Unbound 2019’, a free music festival hosted by the Barbican and Culture Mile where music from a range of genres was experienced in often unexpected spaces, also part of Play the Mile, 18th & 19th May 2019
